You want the sum of the parts to be greater than the whole so make sure you are using quality source material and before you know it, with some killer techniques that I and others teach, you start combining some powerful Photoshop tools and processes together you create magic.

Now I’m going to show you how to create a custom brush preset from a shapes layer. Choose the desired shape that you would like to turn into a brush from the ‘U’ shapes drop down menu in the shape tools options bar. Here I chose a nice Hawaiian looking flower. Make sure that you are on Fill Pixels in the options bar. Create a new blank layer and drag across while clicking to create the flower (the further you drag the larger the flower). It will fill with your foreground color

Now create a marquee selection around it with the ‘M’arquee tool. Go to edit: copy (Ctrl C) and then to File: New. Press OK and then Edit Paste (Ctrl V). Now you have this shape on it’s own temporary document.

Now go to edit: define brush preset and enter a name for your new brush.

Press ‘B’ or click on the brush tool in the tools palette and bring up your brush palette from the View menu. Scroll down and you will now see your brand new shape is a brush! Now you can edit it’s properties and do all kinds of funky stuff. Or ..pretty stuff.
Change the spacing, diameter, scattering and everything!

Here I’m just going with a basic spreading out of the spacing but you can also tilt and rotate your new flower brush. You can create brush presets out of ANY kinds of shape! How powerful is that?! OK, I don’t know about old school versions of Photoshop but at least in 7 and CS. This is the new school. Design is always advancing and taking steps in new directions...there's so much that's already been done that’s out there that you can just break apart by looking at it (when you reach a certain level of Photoshop knowledge) but it truly is unlimited when you combine the powerful tools into an unlimited array with your imagination. This design has never ever been produced before. Imagine what you can do.  Get some cool FREE downloads @ my new website here.

Spread the spacing apart in the Brushes palette for the flowerlei preset.

Here is one way to create a gradient sweep. Yesh these flowers are OK...but not really.

Ctrl click on the layer icon or go to Select: Load Selection and choose the ‘G’radient tool. Now pick a rainbow or another gradient.

Now all that you have to do is make a nice long sweep across the document. I recommend using the linear or the reflected to get the full range of colors in effect. Ctrl D to deselect. Now you can further make enhancements by changing the blending mode or lowering the opacity. You can even change the layer order. Make adjustments until you find something that works best. You might want to just keep solid flower frame because it is meant to be a border/frame in a way.

Creating the screen blending mode also works into the design...one of perfect harmony...at least until the computer crashes or I try to destroy it with an ugly large paintbrush.
Hahaha Mikey, laugh it up furball but I recommend backing up your work in a couple of ways. Hard drive partitions, DVD-R, DVD-RW, CDR, or external hard drive.

Sometimes I do 3-4 ways seriously because I’ve lost dozens and dozens of great designs that I’ll never see again from nasty computer mishaps. So I learned from experience. But anyways, think...harmony and using these techniques you will be well on your way like right now!  Take your skills further with full color Photoshop Design video training and tons of other PS goodies.
